What It Is!
Hey Daddy-O! Lynda Barry's spectacular new graphic novel dropped yesterday and it is fan-frick'n tastic, totally worth your time and hard-earned money. It's a graphic novel, no doubt, but it's also an inspirational (aspirational?) 'art instruction' book too... It's entirely unique in the medium in our humble opinion, and if you ever wanted to write, or draw, or just create, this is totally the book for you.
What It Is retails for $24.95, and is currently in stock at the store and online.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2008 WRAP-UP

On behalf of The Beguiling I'd like to thank everyone who came out for Free Comic Book Day -- and Free Comics For Kids Day -- this past weekend. Despite some pretty terrible weather, we still had a great turnout at both events, with hundreds of free comics finding their way to good homes.

Because of the torrential downpour on Saturday, our planned outdoor event at The Beguiling had to be moved indoors, and since the store is packed floor-to-ceiling with comics and graphic novels, moving it into The Beguiling wasn't an option. Luckily, our neighbors at The Central lent us their entire restaurant for the day, as we gave out comics to all comers, young and old. Thanks to Stephen and everyone at The Central for going above and beyond the call of duty in the pursuit of great comics.

Meanwhile, over at The Palmerston Library, Free Comics For Kids Day was a roaring success. At its busiest point, I counted over 50 kids in the room with about 30-40 parents, and the numbers hovered around the 30-kid mark all day. We figure we had about 300 kids come through in the four-and-a-half hours the event was open, taking part in our crafts and activities, readings, engaging our artist guests, and of course Reading! Reading! Reading! (Comics). It was pretty awesome.
The event was an outgrowth of our Free Comic Book Day events, where we used the momentum generated by the event not only to promote ourselves and the medium, but also the the launches of new comics and related books from some of our favourite artists. The event was a launch/celebration of Jeremy Tankard's Me Hungry from Candlewick, Steve Manale's You Crack Me Up from Owlkids, and Mike Cho's Max Finder Mystery Volume 3 from Owlkids. Even though it was a 'free' event the books were for sale, and while we didn't move a ton I was happy to see that quite a few books made it to good homes.

Our Free Comics For Kids Day events also included readings and presentations from our participating authors. Here, Jeremy Tankard is reading from his award-winning picture-book Grumpy Bird. Also making its official debut at this event was his new book, Me Hungry, the story of an adorable cave-boy looking for something to eat.

Owl magazine illustrators and webcomics creators Brian McLachlan and Steve Manale doubled up in a presentation, teaching kids how to write and draw their own gag cartoons. It was a well-attended presentation both times they gave it.
(Mike Cho drew non-stop, all day, and even emptied out one of his markers doing this amazing 'Venom' drawing for a young fan. Kids love Venom.)

(Volunteer Amanda is no worse the wear after a full day of giving away Owl Magazine, Chirp, Simpsons, Tiny Titans, Owly, and many, many more comics.)

The Art Of SKIM, Now On Display At The Beguiling
We encourage you all to come in and check it out, and to entice you we'd like to present to you some images from the exhibit.

Depression, love, sexual identity, crushes, manipulative peers--teen life in all its dramatic complexities is explored in the touching, literary graphic novel SKIM. The Beguiling proud to be exhibiting some of the process work from the creation of this great graphic novel by cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, and published by Groundwood Press.
"Skim is an unusually strong graphic novel--rich in visuals and observations, and rewarding of repeated readings." - Publishers WeeklyThis small exhibit follows the completion of the graphic novel a page at a time, from Mariko’s initial script through to Jillian’s thumbnails, pencils, inks, and finished art. This is a unique and insightful examination of collaboration and artistic process between two first-time graphic novelists, and best of all the art is lovely!

Saturday May 3rd, 2008. 12noon - 5pm
Palmerston Library, 560 Palmerston Ave (at Bathurst Subway Station)
Featuring authors Michael Cho, Steven Manale, and Jeremy Tankard
FREE!
In conjunction with comics industry holiday FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, The Beguiling is teaming up with The Toronto Public Library, Owlkids, and The Burrow Art Centre to present FREE COMICS FOR KIDS DAY! It's a mini-convention that will feature all kids of events for kids ages 3 and up!
Jeremy Tankard is an award-winning illustrator and graphic novelist. His first picture book is Grumpy Bird, published by Scholastic, and it's become an instant classic! Join Jeremy to celebrate the release of his brand-new picture book Me Hungry!, about a little cave-boy trying to find something to eat while his parents are busy with their daily chores! (Ages 3+)
Steven Manale is one half of the artistic duo responsible for the awesome Chick and Dee! comics that run monthly in chickaDEE Magazine. Join Steven for the release of the new graphic novel collection of his work You Crack Me Up! from Owlkids, the funniest graphic novel around! (Ages 6+)
Michael Cho is the artist of the incredibly popular Max Finder Mystery series, which features mysteries that you and Max solve together! There are three Max Finder Mystery books published by Owlkids! (Ages 9+)
It's all going down at The Palmerston Library, 560 Palmerston Avenue (just west of Bathurst Subway Station) and just around the corner from The Beguiling.
